Chicago police not sure whether a hit-and-run was a hate crime

It’s too early to determine if a hit-and-run that left three men dead in Chicago was a hate crime, police said on Monday, adding that they suspect the assault on the throng outside a gay club was planned.

The three young black males, Donald Huey, 25, Jaylen Ausley, 23, and Devonta Vivetter, 27, were struck by a fast-moving vehicle in the early hours of Sunday outside a well-known gay club on the South Side, sending them flying into the air.

A huge group was seen standing in the road, ostensibly engaged in an argument when the collision occurred, leaving a fourth guy hurt.

Detective Chief Brendan Deenihan said on Monday that while it is not believed to be an accident, the collision may have been caused by the victims’ race or sexual orientation.

It seems to be deliberate, according to Deenihan.

We have no proof that someone attempted to harm these people because of their ethnicity, religion, or other characteristics.

“That might change if we bring in a suspect and additional witnesses.”

Ausley had just graduated from the University of Michigan and returned to the South Side to do social work
Deenihan said that while the automobile had been found four blocks away from the accident, the driver was still at large.

He pleaded with the public for assistance and said, “Obviously, you can’t charge an automobile with a crime.”

We must discover the identity of the driver.

There were several individuals around, as well as numerous individuals inside the pub before this incident.

And we have no doubt that there are people out there who want to help us identify a suspect by providing us with that information.

The three men who died in the horrible collision, which was seen on security cameras, have received tributes.

Donald Huey had decided to leave LA and return home to Chicago for a new job, his sister said
Ausley had just graduated from the University of Michigan and had moved back to the South Side to work with underprivileged youth at the Gary Comer Youth Center, which offers programmes for career planning, job training, and tutoring.

According to Project Love Chicago, which works with employment programmes, “many of the children Jaylen worked with have contacted out to express their thanks and appreciation for Jaylen’s desire to be a constructive mentor in their life.”

“We appreciate your nice sentiments, which have helped us remember the difference he made in such a short period.

‘Jaylen was a light in any space, and we shall miss his contagious enthusiasm.

His character, ambition, humility, love, and care for his community made him an extraordinary young man.

He was developing significantly as a leader in his neighbourhood. He had so much planned for the future and so much ahead of him.

Donald Huey’s sister Charna Riley said that he recently declared intentions to return to the Chicago region in order to take a job at a casino.

Huey was employed at the front desk of a posh condominium complex while residing in Los Angeles.

He adored creating clothing and dressing people, she said to The Chicago Sun Times.

He would comment that something didn’t seem right or didn’t stick out enough, she claimed. “I’ll recall that he would get on me,” said the speaker.

Anita, Vivetter’s cousin, told ABC 7 that the family was heartbroken.

She said, “I’ve been sobbing all day.” “I simply can’t believe it,” she said.

He wasn’t deserving of it.

This is absurd for you to keep on like that.

The establishment issued a statement lamenting the deaths.

The owners of Jeffrey Pub released a statement saying, “Our hearts are sad this morning that such a horrible occurrence has transpired.”

And we support those who lost a friend or loved one.

We always advise everyone to leave and get to their cars straight away so they can get home safely.

Dashcam video captured the incident, which seemed to be a confrontation between a group of people who were standing in the road prior.

Before it is spotted, the silver or white sedan’s engines can be heard revving as it barrels at the group.

One guy, wearing a blue sweatshirt, is thrown to one side, lying on the road and is seen to be moving.

The other three are launched into the air and propelled swiftly several hundred feet.

When they arrived at the University of Chicago hospital, they were declared dead.

The victim was brought to Stroger hospital, where it was unclear what condition he was in.

According to police, there may have been a fifth victim who was hit and transported in a private car to the hospital.
