Chargers race Chicago police vow to stop illegal ‘takeovers’

Shortly after a 40-year-old woman was murdered by a speeding Corvette on Tuesday in crime-ridden Chicago, a group of street racers were seen on camera throwing rocks at police officers.

In what was described as a “chaotic altercation” between the police and the drag racers, the footage shows six Chicago police cars being destroyed.

The Chicago Sun-Times said that the stunt drivers had also been seen lighting off rockets while competing.

Last weekend, nine persons were detained for drag racing through the intersections of the Windy City.

During “street takeovers” during the last week, authorities also confiscated seven automobiles and targeted 22 other vehicles for impoundment.

In June, the city approved a law fining “stunt driving” $10,000 and ordered that any connected automobiles be confiscated.

That hasn’t prevented the bizarre races, and one even resulted in the death of Shawman Meireis, a 40-year-old pedestrian, during a race last weekend.

Two Corvettes were speeding, and one of them crossed lanes, striking another car and Meireis, who was on a crossing, killing her.

At a news conference on Monday, police superintendent David Brown said: “We will hold you responsible for your conduct, regardless of when.”

We’re going to work tirelessly to find you. If there are no repercussions, this conduct will persist.

The 27-year-old driver of the automobile, who received two tickets, said that he was attempting to prevent being carjacked at the time. Police were informed by witnesses that they seemed to be racing.

Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot has accused social media corporations of being to responsible, claiming that the stunt racing draws imitators.

She demanded more police monitoring and government supervision.

“Their inability to be proactive in resolving these concerns to collaborate proactively with law enforcement is an utter atrocity,” Lightfoot said of the internet corporations.

The Chicago Police Department has established a task team to try to put an end to the wild races and enforce the existing regulations intended to discourage them.

Brown has referred to the ordinance’s $10,000 punishment and auto impoundment as a “positive start,” but he would want to see the fine quadrupled and more rules put in place to enable them to reclaim the cars.

Let’s keep going till these knuckleheads understand, he continued.

Through August 28, crime in Chicago has up 37 percent overall compared to the same period last year.

Despite a decrease from the previous year in murders, shootings, and sexual assaults, thefts (65 percent) and robberies (19 percent) remain the most common crimes.
