Liverpool vs. Real Madrid prediction

(3 p.m. ET., Paramount+)

For Liverpool, this season has been challenging. The Reds are currently in eighth place and seven points outside of a Champions League spot despite being anticipated to compete for the Premier League title.

Liverpool has struggled with injuries this year, and in the winter, the Reds lost vital attacker Sadio Mane. The team’s poor defense, which has not actually shown signs of progress during the season, has been the primary problem for them.

The Reds now hold the 12th-best non-penalty anticipated goals allowed, the 14th-best major scoring opportunities allowed, and the 20th-best expected goals allowed on set pieces marks in the Premier League after 22 games. Liverpool recorded two fantastic victories last week over Everton and Newcastle, but despite the latter team playing the whole of the game with 10 men, the Reds gave up 2.0 anticipated goals.

Two games prior to that, Liverpool lost to Wolverhampton, one of the weakest offensive teams in the Premier League, by three goals on 1.8 xG.

Real Madrid could face a lot of difficulties from Liverpool’s still-active attack, but Los Blancos have shown some respectable defensive play this year. It is important to note that La Liga is weaker than the Premier League and that there are far more goals scored in the EPL, but Madrid has only given up one goal on 1.9 xG in its last five games. Even though the competition was easy throughout that span, it’s still outstanding.

Even if the hosts are able to get on the board, it does feel like this will be a game where Real Madrid can exploit Liverpool’s poor transition defense. Real Madrid is built to be a clinical counterattacking side, and that style should suit them quite nicely in a match where they can sit back, let Liverpool have possession, and break when they win the ball.

Liverpool has had two decent performances in a row, but that shouldn’t cover up what’s been a pretty pedestrian season so far. Real Madrid is a good price to pull off the upset on Tuesday.
