In the beautiful month of September, South Africans celebrate the arrival of spring and Heritage Day. Heritage Day on 24 September is about more than just remembering our nation’s history. It is about the rich culture of the different people of this country that unite us as the Rainbow Nation.

One of the defining features of any culture is their food. In South Africa we are spoiled for choice when it comes to our culinary delights. From koeksisters to chakalaka and from dombolo to bobotie, our nation is one of flavour!

In their “Tasty Treats” campaign, Exclusive Books is celebrating the newest South African cookbooks on the market. With sweet treats and traditional dishes, this month’s campaign will have you salivating. As part of this new campaign, Exclusive Books has also taken a favourite SA saying, “Local is lekker” and has given it a spunky twist.

EXCLUSIVE BOOKS TASTY TREATS SELECTION

For this year’s Tasty Reads theme, Exclusive Books had a bit of fun with foodie words. The somewhat overused “Local is Lekker” saying has been turned on its head.

Of course, while these books are indeed lekker, this saying tries to show that they are also much more than that. They are delicious, spicy, hearty, zesty, etc. It drives the message home how totally wonderful local cookbooks and local cooks can be.

Exclusive Books has been doing some snooping and have found all the current food trends. 21st century eating is all about conscious eating. Plant based diets continue to be a hot trend in food, making a book like Veggielicious by Mokgadi Itsweng bang on trend.

Perhaps the most heartwarming trend we are seeing in South Africa cookbook publishing is how ordinary people are getting into the kitchen.

Sifo The Cooking Husband by Sinoyolo Sifo is breaking gender stereotypes with his food and his book. He challenges us to consider who exactly “belongs” in the kitchen?

COOKBOOKS WITH A TASTE OF HERITAGE

Slow cooking on the braai or in the potjie pot are celebrated in Die Demokratiese Republiek van Braai 2 by Jan Braai. This book celebrates the low and slow approach to life and cooking.

Chef Mbombi author of An African Bite asserts that if we don’t keep cooking heritage dishes, we’ll lose them forever. Traditional dishes also use up as much of the plant and animal as possible, so besides upholding heritage, traditional foods have more than one thing going for them: they are low waste!

Named for the assortment of colours it presents when served, Simply Seven Colours by Zola Nene is a traditional South African meal that would include rice, chicken or beef, and a plethora of sides. Zanele van Zyl and her book Cooking with Zanele is part of the personality driven cookbook trend seen around the world, but with a very local twist.

And finally, we like how the “side hustle” trend has even been reflected in the Tasty Reads selection with books like Baking by Christine Capendale.
