Blitzboks will play Chile in the opening Sevens World Cup game

The Blitzboks will meet Chile in the opening round of the Rugby World Cup Sevens on Friday in Cape Town.

Chile overcame Germany 15-12 in qualification play to set up a match against the Springboks Sevens squad.

Chile earned a golden point in extra time to advance to the top 16 after a nail-biter of a match.

Chile clinched a berth with the Commonwealth Games gold medalists by kicking a drop goal from a penalty in front of the posts in sudden death, after the two sides were tied at 12-12 at the end of regulation.

Jack Hunt opened the scoring for Germany, and it wasn’t long until Tim Lichtenberg also crossed the goal line.

Lichtenberg received a yellow card at the stroke of halftime, and Fabian Heimpel was also sent to the sin bin.

Their numerical inferiority cost them dearly. Despite having a 12-0 advantage at halftime, Chile scored all of their points in the second half.

Clemente Armstrong received full credit for his goal against Germany, and Benjamin Videla tied the score with Chile.

At the end of the game, with the score tied at 12 apiece, Vicente Tredenick was the hero by kicking a drop goal to give his team the victory.

The South Americans will meet the Blitzboks in the final match of the day on Friday at 7:03pm.
