Patrick Carroll, the eccentric billionaire, will not donate $1.5 million to Unicef after all.
Last summer, we published a series of pieces about the enigmatic real estate mogul’s antics in Europe, including his fist fights with fellow One Percenters and lavish spending at art and charity auctions.
Therefore, we were not completely surprised to discover that Carroll had reassessed the lavish generosity.
This week, Page Six discovered that he termed Unicef, one of the most well-known charitable organizations, “fraudulent” and afterwards invoked his right to recant his statement.
Carroll attended the LuisaViaRoma x UNICEF gala in July, which was also attended by Spike Lee, Jared Leto, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ansel Elgort, and Vogue UK editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, and won the auctions for a vintage car and a “‘Top Gun’ experience” that included a ride in a fighter jet and fine food, wine, and accommodations in Burgundy.
The real estate tycoon has decided not to pay the $1.5 million he said he would for the opulent things, claiming that his bank has deemed the event organizers to be fraudulent.
It appears that the transaction did not take place.
Carroll stated to Page Six “I was startled when my bank identified the beneficiary as a fraudulent organization after I had sent the entire contribution through the bank.
As I later discovered, the payment was technically sent to the [Capri event’s] “membership committee” and event planners, who lavishly spent on the benefit itself. Additionally, I was told that the contribution was tax-deductible, but this proved out to be inaccurate.”
“At that time, I determined that my charitable contributions would be better spent elsewhere.” he continued.
Duncan Levin Patrick, his attorney, remarked, “Patrick Carroll is a philanthropist, and he will continue to donate to organizations as long as the funds reach those in need.”
Representatives of Unicef did not respond.
