Benjamin Mendy appears at Chester Crown Court for his rape trial

Football player Benjamin Mendy of Manchester City has appeared at the court ahead of his trial where he is charged with eight charges of rape.

Mendy, a 28-year-old foreign national from France, is also accused with one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault. Seven ladies are involved in all of the crimes.

Mendy entered a not guilty plea this morning to the addition of a second rape allegation stemming from an alleged assault on July 23 of last year.

At a hearing at Chester Crown Court last month, Judge Steven Everett, Recorder of Chester, issued an injunction prohibiting media from reporting the most recent charge until the restriction was withdrawn.

All of the alleged offences are said to have occurred between October 2018 and August 2017 at his home residence.

Together with his 40-year-old co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie, who has pleaded not guilty to all accusations, Mendy will stand trial.

Matturie, of Eccles, Salford, denies four charges of sexual assault and eight counts of rape involving eight young people.

His alleged offences occurred between July 2012 and August of last year.

Restrictions on reporting are in place prior to the trial and none of the implicated ladies may be named.

Mendy joined Manchester City in 2017, after leaving Monaco, for an estimated £52 million.

After being charged by the police, the club suspended him.

Both accused are free on bail.
