They believe that Labour needs to come up with an answer to the trans question that protects women’s rights, while also bringing policy in line with public opinion.

Senior figures within the party have echoed these concerns and have warned that the party must not fall into a similar trap as Nicola Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party, which saw a decline in party membership and dwindling support due to her approach to transgender rights.

A Labour Party source revealed that Sturgeon’s downfall was due to the Gender Recognition Act, which was perceived as trying to do good for a very small minority group at the expense of alienating women.

The source believes that Labour needs to balance the needs of different groups and ensure that its policies do not offend an awful lot of women who feel that their place in society is being eliminated.

Sir Keir Starmer had previously pledged to introduce similar legislation to Scotland’s Gender Recognition Act, which would allow transgender people to self-declare their gender in England and Wales.

However, there are concerns that this policy could be quietly dropped before the next general election.

Labour must address these concerns and clarify its stance on transgender policy to ensure that it does not fall into a similar trap as Sturgeon’s SNP.

The Gender Reform Bill, which proposed allowing anyone over the age of 16 to legally change their sex without consulting a doctor, was blocked by Westminster from receiving royal assent in January of this year.

Shortly thereafter, Sturgeon resigned and admitted that she had become a polarizing figure.

It is important for Labour to learn from the SNP’s experience and ensure that its policies are in line with public opinion and do not offend any particular group.
