Australia bread shortage: Helga’s, Mighty Soft, Wonder White hit by Goodman Fielder fire

Some of Australia’s most popular breads are in limited supply after a terrible fire blasted through a large baking business, with 100 employees narrowly surviving.

Goodman Fielder, which bakes Wonder White, Mighty Soft, Buttercup, and Helga’s goods, warned on Thursday that there might be a scarcity of products in supermarkets as a result of the fire that devastated its Moorebank facility in Sydney.

The fire happened last week, but the business warned that shortages, notably of the Wonder White and Helgas brands, will impact consumers throughout this week and into the next week.

The fire, according to a statement from Fire and Rescue NSW, destroyed the facility.

The agency also reported that the fire began in a bread-baking oven.

The statement said, “An automated fire alarm alerted firefighters to the incident in Moorebank just after 9:45 p.m. on August 11.”

Across the neighbourhood, flames and a massive smoke cloud could be seen. Moments before the fire started, 100 employees were evacuated.

Fire and Rescue NSW captured footage of the western Sydney business engulfed in smoke as massive flames climbed over numerous sections.

There were no injuries recorded.

In addition to Country Life bread, Goodman Fielder also bakes Lawsons, La Famiglia Kitchen, pampas pastries, and Bush Oven Outback Bread. The firm published a statement apologizing in advance for anticipated product shortages and stating that it was doing “everything possible” to minimize consumer interruption.

Over the next several days, there will be a scarcity of our items on the shelves, but by [Friday, August 19], we anticipate that the supply interruption will be modest, although with a reduced selection.

Unfortunately, the facility incurred significant damage to our baking manufacturing line, and we are currently assessing the overall effect.

The health and safety of our personnel on-site and the safety of those in neighboring facilities was our first priority.

The bread behemoth said that it will “ramp up” baking at other plants and collaborate with “third party bakeries” to minimize consumer disruptions.Drone footage showed the location of the fire in the bakery giant's factoryGoodman Fielder issued an apology to shoppers over the likely shortages and said it is doing everything it can to increase supply from other factoriesWonder White and Helgas are the Goodman Fielder breads most affected by shortages after the blazeA NSW Fire and Rescue statement said 100 workers managed to get out of the building just before the fire took hold and destroyed the western Sydney factoryA devastating fire ripped through the huge Goodman Fielder baking factory, with 100 workers escaping just in time around 9.45pm last Thursday
