ASUU Strike Delays Tertiary Students’ Bursary Payments

The Federal Ministry of Education announced on Monday that the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities had impeded the payment of university student bursaries.

Andrew Adejo, the ministry’s permanent secretary, made the announcement at a news conference in Abuja for World Teachers Day 2022.

According to MySchoolGist, in 2021, Buhari vowed to grant bursaries to students studying education at universities and institutions of education.

In public universities, B.Ed/B.A. Ed/BSc. Ed students will earn stipends of N75,000.00 every semester, while NCE students would receive stipends of N50,000.00 per semester.

“The Federal Government should develop a method for state governments to automatically engage NCE graduates at the Basic Education level,” Buhari remarked via his education minister Adamu Adamu.

In his remark, Adejo said, “The execution of the payment of stipends has commenced.” We were unable to collect data on all university students due to the strike. We only have 7 percent of the data required for payment processing.

“It is vital to note that the New National Teaching Policy has been implemented nationwide.” It is a comprehensive package that will ultimately include career progression, compensation, professional teaching standards, teacher qualification, deployment, and administration.

“The theme for the 2022 World Teachers’ Day, ‘the transformation of education, begins with teachers,’ emphasizes the importance of empowering teachers for effective transformation of education to ensure quality teaching and learning and galvanize technological advances to meet the ever-changing needs of national growth and development.”
