Surface, created by Veronica West (High Fidelity) and produced by Apple Studios and Hello Sunshine, follows Sophie (Mbatha-Raw), a lady suffering from severe amnesia following a terrible brain injury.
In Season 1, which takes place in San Francisco, Sophie attempts to rediscover herself, uncovering crimes ranging from an affair to far deeper issues about her secret background and actual identity.
Mbatha-Raw stated in a statement, “I am eager to continue this adventure and delve deeper into the tension and mystery of ‘Surface’ with this wonderful team.” “I like portraying Sophie, and I can’t wait for supporters and new viewers to join us in season two, as she explores the perilous new realm of her past. As an actor and executive producer, bringing this narrative home to London is tremendously significant to me.”
“This is a completely new chapter set in a brand new environment, and I can’t wait for viewers to watch how the show progresses as we explore a more confident and fearless Sophie in season two,” said West. “Working with Gugu, Apple, and the Hello Sunshine team has been an absolute delight, and it’s an honor to continue the adventure.”
Season 2 will take place in Sophie’s homeland of London, where she will discover her true origins and what shaped her into a damaged individual. However, the disaster she left behind in San Francisco will come up with her, as West alluded to in the season finale.
“She obviously leaves a tsunami in her wake, so people will not let sleeping dogs lie,” West told The Hollywood Reporter following the conclusion of the season. Even if Sophie has different intentions, I believe it is possible that some of our favorite characters from the first season may return.
Mbatha-Raw and West executive produce alongside Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter of Hello Sunshine. West is the showrunner. The first season was directed by Sam Miller, Kevin Sullivan, Jennifer Morrison, and Tucker Gates.
