Ambassador Simon Manley, the UK’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, delivered a statement ahead of the adoption – by consensus – of a resolution on the situation of human rights of women and girls in Afghanistan

This project comes at a critical time for Afghanistan’s rights to women and girls.

Additionally, it sends a clear message to all Afghan women and girls that says, “We stand with you.”

Women in Afghanistan must fight for their fundamental rights to be seen and heard in society, as Ms. Fawzia Koofi stated so movingly at the Urgent Debate here.

We completely support the draft’s main points, which call for an immediate end to any abuses of human rights against anyone and a reversal of the laws and procedures that limit the rights of Afghan women and girls.

Empowering women and girls to engage fully, equally, and meaningfully in all facets of public life must be part of this. It must involve putting a stop to all types of violence and discrimination, especially sexual and gender-based violence.

Additionally, it must entail making sure that victims and survivors across the nation have access to comprehensive, unrestricted, safe sexual and reproductive health services as well as justice and reparation.

The only place in the world where girls cannot go to secondary education is Afghanistan.

It is crucial that the resolution we are discussing today contains language that captures the tragic reality of girls’ education in this nation.

And that’s why it calls on the Taliban to open schools for girls of all ages right now and reiterates that every Afghan kid has an equal right to an education devoid of discrimination.

The UK is pleased to co-sponsor this draft resolution and expresses gratitude to its principal backers for their ongoing efforts to foster agreement in this Council.

We kindly request the assistance of the entire Council in advancing this initiative and standing with Afghan women and girls.
