A young powerlifter who accused a top coach of rape is being sued for defaming him.

Dori Qu, 22, will be forced to defend allegations she made against the head coach of Melbourne University Weightlifting and Powerlifting Club, Robert Wilks, in a letter sent to members of Powerlifting Australia.

Mr Wilks, 67, alleges Ms Qu defamed him when she alleged in print and via text messages that he had raped her, another student and suggested he was a sexual predator that ‘targets small-built, Asian female students for the purposes of sexually harassing them.’

The matter was scheduled to appear before the County Court of Victoria on Tuesday, but was adjourned at the last minute for a date to be fixed.

Court documents obtained by Daily Mail Australia outline the sordid allegations put by Ms Qu, a Chinese international studying at Melbourne University, against her former coach.

Mr Wilks has been a pioneer of powerlifting in Australia over the past 40 years, inventing a scoring system popularly adopted and used throughout international powerlifting competitions known as the ‘Wilks Formula’.

The coach temporarily stood down as chief executive of Powerlifting Australia last weekend after The Sunday Age published a story detailing the defamation action.

In documents filed with the court, Mr Wilks claimed he had been recognised within the powerlifting community ‘worldwide’ as the face of Powerlifting Australia.

Ms Qu’s complaints to Powerlifting Australia in July last year initially led to Mr Wilks being banned from Melbourne University campuses while it conducted its own investigation.

Powerlifting Australia released a statement in March this year declaring it had concluded its investigation into the allegations and restored Mr Wilks as CEO.

The letter had alleged Mr Wilks effectively groomed Ms Qu after she made an unrelated complaint against the club’s president.

WHAT IS POWERLIFTING?

Powerlifting is similar to weightlifting, but focuses on the squat, bench press and deadlift barbell movements.

Unlike weightlifting, it is not an Olympic sport.

Various campaigns have been held over the years for it to be included in the Olympics.

‘My coach Wilks told me that he was “the only one on the committee that is truly on my side”, and that he would help me,’ she wrote.

‘This sentiment soon developed into “I have done so much for you. I did all that for you. Why can’t you do something for me?” and he would ask for sexual favors. ‘

Ms Qu claimed Mr Wilks once arrived at her home loaded on the sex drug Viagra and insisted she have sex with him.

‘If I refused, he would either get angry and accuse me, or cover his face and start crying and say I was torturing him,’ she stated.

Ms Qu told Powerlifting Australia she had trusted and respected Mr Wilks, which he used to his advantage.

‘I was so proud to tell people that Robert Wilks, the goat of powerlifting, the CEO of Powerlifting Australia, that man, is my coach. I never doubted a word he said. I never doubted his judgement.’ she stated.

Ms Qu further alleged another former student, only identified as Hannah, had also been a victim of Mr Wilks’ alleged offending.

‘No one believed her, so she left the club. She is also a petite Asian girl who I do not doubt trusted the coach and was very vulnerable,’ Mr Qu wrote.

In Mr Wilks a statement of claim filed with the court, Mr Wilks claims the allegations have, or are likely to cause ‘immeasurable damage’ to his reputation.

‘The First Imputations of Concerns were published to senior members of PA, who are persons with whom the Plaintiff enjoys his reputation and move in the circles in which the Plaintiff moves,’ the claim stated.

Mr Wilks claims the allegations quickly spread throughout the small and tight knit powerlifting community.

‘Further it is likely that the Plaintiff’s reputation will be seriously damaged during the course of PA’s investigation into the allegations in the PA Email, which investigation remains on foot as at the date of this pleading,’ he stated.

Mr Wilks further claimed publicity of the defamation case had further added to his pain.

‘As a result of this publicity, as well as the grapevine effect of the PA Email, members of PA have abandoned the organisation in droves, which is indicative of the plaintiff’s reputation (as the CEO of PA) having been severely and irretrievably damaged in the eyes of such members,’ he stated.
