The South African Police Service reported that two elderly persons believed to have shared a residence perished in a shack fire in Nomzamo, Eastern Cape, on the evening of 4 February (SAPS).

Captain Namhla Mdleleni, spokesman for the Eastern Cape police, stated that officers were dispatched to the area and discovered a burning shack in Nomzamo, Mlungisi.

“Two bodies, a 90-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman, were discovered in the embers after the fire was extinguished,” a police official said.

The identities of the victims remain concealed until the formal identification process has been completed. The cause of the fatal shack fire has not yet been determined, and the local police are conducting an inquest.

In January, in a separate occurrence near the Eastern Cape, around 49 homesteads were destroyed by fire in Port St. Johns. According to the provincial police, the incident may be connected to continuing stock thefts and faction conflicts in the area.
