64-year-old suspect, who hid his gun in kitchen cupboard, arrested

The Western Cape police apprehended a 64-year-old man who hid his gun in his kitchen cupboard after receiving a tip.

The suspect was arrested at his residence in Nyanga on January 15, 2023.

On 15 Sunday, 2023, members of the Provincial Extortion Task Team were informed that a weapon was stored on the premises at Tony Yengeni street, Cross Roads in Nyanga.

The police acted on the tip and proceeded to the location, where they discovered the 64-year-old homeowner.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, the owner cooperated with police, granted them access to his property, and permitted a search.

While the police investigated his residence, the suspect retrieved his firearm from his kitchen cupboard and gave it to them.

Malcolm Pojie said, “The owner fetched a firearm from a kitchen cupboard and handed it over to the police.”

He said that authorities immediately arrested the owner. The members seized a Norinco 9mm handgun with four rounds of ammunition.

According to Pojie, the suspect is charged with unlicensed possession of a weapon and ammunition.

Pojie said that the suspect will shortly appear in court.

In an unconnected incident on January 15, 2023, the Western Cape police captured three suspects following a vehicle pursuit through the streets of Nyanga.

Management of the provincial police thanked the members for their continuing dedication to ridding the streets of illegal weapons that harm residents.

Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said that under Operation Restore, police officers were sent to investigate a suspicious car and its occupants.

Pojie said that the police had received information about a blue Golf making suspicious stops at cellphone outlets.

Malcolm Pojie said, “Members in search of the car and its occupants and spotted the car driving along Intsikizi Street, Crossroads.”

According to him, when the suspects spotted the police approaching, the driver accelerated away. The police pursued them along Intsikizi street and successfully stopped them.

Malcolm Pojie said, “They searched the vehicle and found a .45 revolver, loaded with six rounds.”

The suspects, between the ages of 32 and 35, have been detained and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The police also took the Volkswagen Golf and a small amount of cash. The accused will soon appear in court.
