Police said a 23-year-old woman was killed in a single-car incident on Staten Island that resulted in the vehicle’s longitudinal separation.
According to police, the driver was apprehended following the fatal incident.
One company owner arriving at work on the island compared the bloody, debris-strewn accident sight to “Beirut.”
The unidentified woman died as a result of injuries she sustained after being ejected from the passenger seat of the white Dodge automobile she was riding in, according to authorities.
The incident occurred at 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, according to officials.
The NYPD reported that a 30-year-old male was travelling northbound when he lost control of his vehicle in front of 2545 Hylan Boulevard near New Dorp Lane in the New Dorp neighborhood and struck a “barrier wall.”
“It appears that the vehicle then collided with a utility pole,” an NYPD official said.
Authorities reported that while the driver sustained minor injuries, the 23-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the site. A NYPD official stated, “The operator was taken into custody and charges are pending.”
Mario Basso, 31, the proprietor of the H2O Auto Spa on Hylan Boulevard, reported that he and his staff arrived for work at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday to find police investigating the wreckage just 100 feet from his establishment.
“I don’t understand how the utility pole is still standing after being struck so hard,” a terrified Basso said, adding, “The car was shattered in two.”
The owner expressed his condolences to the victim’s family, stating, “It’s a tragedy and a sad morning for everyone involved. Everyone is distressed. It looks like Beirut. There are rubble and blood everywhere.”
